Why Don't People Go to Church?

Tomorrow I am preaching from the latter half of Acts 2; "The Ingathering" after Pentecost, and I was thinking: "What reasons do people have for not going to (or being part of a) church?"

So, what do you think?

I dont go to church basically because i hate people that act one way at church and then when no ones around act another way and are compleate jerks, i dont go because i dont want to be just another hypocrite jerk, thats just me though, im sure other people have better reasons

Rich Mullins once said at a concert "If you don't want to go to church on Sunday to sit by the hypocrites, then perhaps you should go jogging on Sunday morning with all the perfect people." :)

I think it depends on where you go to church. If you go somewhere where you are constantly fed the law to point out your sin and never fed the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ and reminded of his grace and love, I can see where someone might lose their desire to go. I don't think you should leave church feeling like you are a wretched person, because we all are and we all fall short. I think you should leave feeling like, although we are wretched, Jesus came to save us and we can be forgiven. Even if we go out the next day and act like a jerk. :)

I'm reading a wonderful little book by Julia Duin called "Quitting Church" that asks and answers that very question. For her part, though, she's asking why the FAITHFUL are leaving the church. Sobering, to say the least.
